Dr Hayes is certified in canine rehabilitation. The advanced training to specialize in this field takes several weeks of classes over a 12 month period and an internship with a certified practicing rehabilitation therapist. Canine Rehabilitation Institute offers the courses to veterinarians and physical therapists.
Because pets of all types and sizes can benefit from rehabilitation and conditioning programs, Whitney Veterinary Hospital is pleased to announce the addition of these services to our practice. Rehabilitation services include exercise protocols, in-patient treatment, post-operative recovery plans, weight management, conditioning programs, laser therapy and TENS.
Please call the office at 309-685-4707 to set up a consultation. We look forward to helping your dog get fit and more active!

Spring Is Coming! I know - it's hard to believe right now. But, it is! In a few short weeks the mosquitos - and the wood ticks - will be back. Have you taken your pets in for their heartworm check? You really do need to do that - before you start giving them the heartworm pill again. If you continued giving them during the winter, good for you. They help with more than heartworm parasites! Just ask your veterinarian.
We need to be thinking about Fido's spring activities. Has he/she been laying around all winter? If so, they're probably going to overdo it during the first few balmy spring days that they're outside. And, I'm not just talking about a few strained muscles! If you were contemplating a sudden increase in Your exercise program, you'd head for your doctor to be sure it was safe. Older dogs should be checked too. It also might be a good time to sign those puppies up for some spring training at one of the local dog training clubs. Peoria is blessed to have several very good training clubs. Just check with your veterinarian or the yellow pages.
It's April now and starting to stay light late in the evening. Temperatures are cool enough for a nice walk and not so hot to be miserable. That means it's a good time to start a walking program with your dog! And - if you aren't walking them, why not? The "Special" time that you spend with them will be repaid many times over. It'll help you release the tension from your job and helps with their bonding to you. (I know, your older dog is quite bonded enough, thank you. But; those young dogs and puppies need this time! If you're concerned about an older or arthritic dog, Dr. Hayes can give you a few exercises that you can guide your dog or cat through to help them warm up to summer. You'll both enjoy being outside in the sunshine. It really lifts the stress of the day from your shoulders.
Don't forget to get your Senior Pet Blood Panels and the Heartworm test taken care of. We also have a related article about What the Blood test means. After you read those, you may want to read about Senior Pet Care.
As the temperatures climb, you may want to spend some time cleaning up the living quarters of your outdoor pets and getting them ready for summer! Don't take any chances on them suffering from heat stroke. Look over our handout about Summer Care For Your Pet

How about some home-baked treats and "cookies" for your pets? When you do it yourself, you can be sure that only safe ingredients go into their treats and you can make them into the expensive, fancy shapes just like they do! Check out our nice selection of Pet Treat Recipes.
Time to take your pup for a walk!
