After a mild sedation, with a sedative and analgesic, the pet is anesthetized with isoflurane, delivered by mask. An endotracheal tube is placed to protect the airway and allow controlled flow of gas and monitoring.Other monitors are placed to keep track of heart rate, oxygenation and blood pressure.

An intravenous catheter (IV) is placed to provide immediate vein access in case of emergency. After the IV is placed, it is taped to keep it secure.

For sterility, the fur is shaved, and an antibacterial/antiviral scrub follows the clipping. After a soapy scrub, alcohol is applied.
