Dachshund

Bella is a Dachshund!

Although originally bred to dig rodents from underground, the Dachshund has finally found its true niche - as a family pet! Its high energy will be well spent romping with the children in its own family. The exercise requirements of this little dog can be met with walks on leash, thus making it ideal for apartment life.

These curious little dogs are bold and ready for adventure! They can have smooth, long or a “rough” coat, but the originals were smooth. Their colors range from the well known red through brindle. It’s small size makes it ideal for apartment life, but it loves a chance to take walks outside. We are beginning to see some of these little dogs in the agility forum; especially in the "Teacup" trials.

The smooth-coated variety has a short, shining coat; the long-haired is sleek and sometimes wavy; and the wire-haired should have tight, thick, hard hair with a fine undercoat.

These bold little dogs were bred to dig their way into burrows, and they still love to track and dig up "prey". However, this active little dog does best as an indoor dog with access to a yard. Without adequate exercise, the Dachshund is likely to become obese.

Dachshunds are generally bold and always ready for fun! It's small size (under 9 inches!) makes it ideal for smaller homes with more limited spaces.

The standard Dachshund will typically stand under 9” tall and weigh up to 32 pounds. The Miniature weighs less than 11 pounds and is under 6” tall.

We are pleased to welcome Bella to our practice!
