Gabriel is a Mastiff!
The English Mastiff is an ancient breed. They were used by Rome as war dogs and in medieval times as hunting and guard dogs. Today’s Mastiffs trace their lineage to a dog owned by Sir Peers Legh. This dog stood over his wounded master’s body and protected him for hours during the battle of Agincourt.
This large dignified dog is surprisingly good-natured, calm and gentle; but it needs a lot of room to stretch out and be comfortable. It becomes so devoted and attached to its’ family that it shouldn’t be kenneled outside.
Although the Mastiff drools, the short coat needs minimal care. At 175 to 190 pounds, and 27 to 30 inches tall (at the shoulder) this is one of the world’s largest dogs. Acceptable colors are apricot, fawn or brindle with dark ears, nose and muzzle.< br />
Adult Mastiffs need daily, moderate exercise. They are not very tolerant of hot weather and need to live inside with their families.< br />
They are usually calm, easygoing and well-mannered; but they do need room to stretch out for comfort.< br />
This is a large dog! Weighing between 175-200 pounds and standing between 27 to 30 inches at the shoulder.
We are pleased to welcome Gabriel to our practice!
