Italian Greyhound

Walter is an Italian Greyhound!

Italian Greyhounds are, essentially, a miniature greyhound. Art from the Mediterranean region depicts miniature greyhounds nearly 2000 years ago! They were taken to Europe by the middle ages and became a favorite in Italy. After arriving in England in the 1600’s, it became so popular that concerted breeding programs to further reduce its size nearly destroyed the breed. (Although they succeeded in reducing its size, the quality of the dogs was so reduced that they were no longer sound!) Fortunately, some high quality dogs had been taken to America in the late 19th century and the breed was revived.

This small sighthound is gentle, sensitive and timid. It's good with children and other pets; however, it's easily injured by boisterous play with children or other larger dogs. This breed is susceptible to leg and tail fractures.

Its exercise needs can be met with walks on leash; however, this is a sighthound! It loves to run and chase! If kept in a fenced area, it can be allowed to stretch out - literally - and sprint! The joint angulations of the front and rear legs will allow these little animals to sprint with their front and back legs completely parallel to the ground!

Knowing that the original homeland of the Italian Greyhound was in the temperate Mediterranean region, we are easily aware that this is not an outdoor dog. Its short, fine hair provides almost no protection from the weather. This little guy hates the cold! And I do mean little! At 7 to 14 lbs on a 15" tall frame, this is a slender, elegant dog!

We are pleased to welcome Walter to our practice!
