Zeke is a German Shorthaired Pointer!
These fine hunting dogs were achieved by blending scenthounds with the heavy Spanish Pointer to get a pointer that could track the prey. The original animals were heavy, hound like animals that would easily kill the game - as well as track it. It demonstrated no avoidance of the water. Further crosses with English Pointers helped to bring the bulky build into more of a pointer build; although, it reduced the dog's willingness to fight and kill the prey.
The German Shorthaired Pointer is a true "Gun Dog". This versatile dog excels at pointing, retrieving, & tracking. It will eagerly spend an entire day in the field and the evening curled up at its' masters feet! The Shorthaired Pointer does best if allowed to share the house with its' family, although - with proper facilities - it can live outside in mild climates. It needs occasional brushing to maintain the short coat.
This is a high-energy dog that needs lots of daily exercise and mental stimulation. It may be too boisterous for small children, but is a devoted family pet. It is very sensitive to its owners demands and needs gentle training to prevent stifling its hunting talents. It may need up to an hour of vigorous exercise every day, but loves to swim if you can provide the opportunity.
The males can weigh up to 70 pounds and stand 25" tall. The females are typically under 60 pounds and 23". The short coat is usually brown or brown and white.
We are pleased to welcome Zeke to our practice!
