Shoshi is an Akita!
The Akita is the largest of the native Japanese dog breeds. Its background includes many hunting, fighting and guard dogs from colder climates. The first Akita to arrive in America was brought here by Helen Keller in 1937. After WWII, many were brought home by servicemen. Its main use in Japan is as a guard or police dog.
This large, powerful dog can be independent, stubborn and bold. It becomes utterly devoted to its family and reserved toward strangers. Its loyalty to its family can cause it to mourn the loss of a family member for years.
The Akita needs consistent training to maximize its potential as a family member. It is an intelligent dog that appreciates mental and physical stimulation daily. With adequate daily exercise, it should be a quiet, well-mannered house dog. It can live outdoors, but will be happier if it can be inside - with its family.
The dense, double coat will need weekly combing to remove dead hair, but is ideal for protecting the dog from water and the weather. The males can weigh up to 115 pounds and stand 28" tall. The females are smaller at 90 pounds and 26" tall.
We are pleased to welcome Shoshi to our practice!
