Molly is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever!
The "Chessie's" history can be traced to a shipwrecked English brig in 1807. The rescued crew included 2 presumed Newfoundland pups whose skill at water retrieving became so legendary that other retrievers, Newfies, Bloodhounds and Spaniels were brought to breed with them. A distinct breed was established by 1885 that demonstrated remarkable skill at marking and retrieving in the icy waters of Chesapeake Bay. This is one of the few "All-American" breeds.
This is a hardy, active dog that loves to swim - even when the water is icy. It loves to retrieve and demonstrates a remarkable ability to mark where the prey has fallen. It tends to be independent and strong-willed, but is eager to learn. Even though it is one of the hardiest of the retrievers, it craves time with its family. It need a lot of exercise!
At 55 to 80 pounds and 21 to 26 inches tall, this is a lot of canine companion. Their wavy, oily coat keeps them dry in the water and doesn’t need much maintenance. They shouldn’t be bathed to often because it removes the oil that keeps them dry in the water.
We are pleased to welcome Molly to our practice!
