Basenji

Prince is a Basenji!

This little member of the Hound group was discovered in Africa with Pygmy hunters who put bells on them and used them in packs to drive game into nets. Early attempts to take a few of them to England were unsuccessful because they all died of distemper. A few eventually survived and a breeding program was begun around 1930. This was also when they received their name "Basenji" - or "Bush Thing".

Basenjis have retained some of their primitive characteristics: they only come into estrus once a year, and they lack the ability to bark. They are a feisty little dog. Curious, clever and independent. They love to hunt, trail and chase game.

Weighing around 22 pounds and standing about 16-17" tall, the Basenji may lack the ability to bark, but they aren't silent. They yodel, howl and shriek instead. They're considered to be quite "catlike" in their ways.

While care of the coat is minimal, providing them with enough exercise and mental stimulation will keep their families busy. This little bundle of energy will do best with an active family.

We are pleased to welcome Prince to our practice!
