German Shorthaired Pointer

Maggie is a German Shorthaired Pointer!

The German shorthaired pointer is a distinguished member of the Sporting Group. These versatile hunting dogs are accomplished at tracking, pointing, retrieving and, if necessary, game killing.

Development of this breed began in the 1600's with the crossing of the heavy-bodied Spanish Pointer and the Hannover Hound to produce a heavy dog that could track and point. The English Pointer was a further cross to slenderize the breed some; however, it did bring with it an aversion to water and a dislike of attacking game. These traits were bred out with time.

Today's German Shorthair likes nothing more than a day in the field with it's master; followed by an evening curled up by his feet. It needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to avoid becoming frustrated and destructive. Many are very sensitive and need gentle training to avoid stifling their spirit. They love swimming and will do so if given an opportunity. Many of these dogs are seen in the obedience and agility rings.

This beautiful medium to large dog - at 21" to 25" and 45 to 70 pounds - has a short, easy to maintain coat that is usually liver or white with liver spots.

We are pleased to welcome Maggie to our practice!
