Pembroke Welsh Corgi

8 Ball is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi!

Corgies date from ancient times in south Wales, and a Welsh cattle dog is mentioned in a book from the 11th century. The original Corgis were known as yard-long dogs and were supposed to measure a Welsh yard long from nose to tail tip. These dogs may have originated from the short-legged English "Turn-spit" dogs that were used to turn spits in English kitchens.

The value of this little dog was to drive the herd during a time when the farmers land holdings were determined by how much land his cattle occupied. The Corgi would nip at the cattle's heels and dodge their kicks while driving them over the land.

This agile, tireless breed is fun-loving and high-spirited! They are devoted companions that are well-mannered but may tend to bark when left alone. It needs a surprising amount of exercise for such a small dog - unless we remember it's origins.

The Pembroke Corgi is smaller than the Welsh Cardigan Corgi. It's features are sharper and it has no tail. It became the favorite of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. It's very good with children, although it may nip at their heels while "herding" them. The Pembroke typically weighs less than 25 pounds and stands under 12" tall. The coat can be red, sable, fawn or black and tan. There may or may not be white markings. The coat will need weekly brushing to prevent mats.

We are pleased to welcome 8 Ball to our practice!
