Duece is a Bullmastiff!
The Bullmastiff is a descendent of the Mastiff and the Bulldog. It’s a fairly recent breed; perhaps occurring in the late 1700’s, but more likely during the late 1800’s. They were counted on to protect the English gamekeepers and their families from poachers.
These animals were trained to wait silently until the poacher and his dog were close, attack on command and subdue the poacher without killing them. Mastiffs were too slow and the Bulldog was too small, so they were crossed to produce the Bullmastiff.
This gentle, quiet dog is a devoted companion that is good with children -- if it is raised with them. It’s stubborn and not easily goaded into fighting, although some won’t get along with other dogs. It needs a home with a firm owner and consistent training.
These 100 to 130 pound dogs have difficulty tolerating the heat, need regular exercise to keep from becoming fat, and don’t need a lot of grooming. They stand between 24 and 27 inches tall at the shoulder.
We are pleased to welcome Duece to our practice!
