Bassett Hound

Sir Winston is a Bassett Hound!

Evidence exists that these hounds were being bred in France during the 16th century to hunt badger, although the timeline is fuzzy until after the French revolution, when more common men were able to obtain guns and go hunting. These men needed a heavy-boned dog, with an excellent nose, that they could count on to track the game and move slowly enough to follow on foot. They were usually used to hunt rabbit that would "go to ground".

During the 1800’s, further breeding was done to increase the size of the Basset Hound to its current dimensions. It now weighs around 40-60 pounds and stands under 14 inches tall.

Although this is a deliberate, slow-moving dog, it needs regular exercise to remain in good condition. It can be a determined tracker and difficult to sway from a course that it’s settled upon. It can become so determined to follow a trail that it gets itself lost.

Although the coat needs little grooming, the Basset Hound has a tendency to drool because of the loose lips and the wrinkles around the face. These wrinkles are what the dog uses to trap scent while following a trail. Regular cleaning will be necessary around the mouth and face. Their loud baying will notify all around that it is excitedly following a trail.

We are pleased to welcome Sir Winston to our practice!
