Harper is a Rhodesian Ridgeback!

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are descended from several European breeds that were crossed with the native South African Hottentot hunting dogs in an effort to develop a dog that could withstand the extremes of heat, cold, brush and drought; all while helping to hunt and guard the compounds. The native dogs were distinguished by a ridge of hair that grew towards the head along the spine.

Some of the dogs that resulted from these breedings were taken to Rhodesia during the 1870’s to hunt lion and did so well that the breed eventually became known as the Rhodesian Ridgeback.

This dog is a member of the Hound Group. It’s loyal, protective of its family and a keen hunter. It also can be strong-willed, loves to run, and needs plenty of mental and physical exercise to avoid boredom. The males can weigh up to 85 pounds and stand 27 “ tall. The glossy coat is easily maintained with occasional brushing.
