Sunny is an Old English Sheepdog!
The Old English Sheepdog originated in England during the 1800’s as an answer to the problem facing shepherds. They needed a big, strong dog that would protect the flocks from wolves. As the wolves disappeared, the dogs were turned to the job of herding cattle and sheep to market. Their tails were "bobbed" because of the British tax on non-working dogs. The custom still continues.
This is a gentle giant. A family clown with good house manners that loves its family and thrives on human companionship. It loves to "herd" the family children. It can live for a short period of time outside in temperate climates, but is better suited to living indoors with its human companions.
The thick, grey and white coat has a waterproof undercoat and a shaggy outercoat that needs brushing and combing frequently – 2 or 3 times a week – to prevent mats. At 22 inches tall and around 80 pounds, the Old English needs moderate, daily exercise to maintain its condition and prevent weight gain.
We are pleased to welcome Sunny to our practice!
