What size are Pets?

A large dog is considered to be a dog that is over 24 inches in height at the shoulder. This group will include the Newfoundland, Great Pyrenees, Great Dane, Mastiff, and Irish Wolfhound.

Medium dogs will include the retrievers, Afghan Hounds, Border Collies, and Sheepdogs. The small dogs will include Cocker Spaniels, Beagles, Chihuahuas and several others.

Dogs are given a size rating that is based on their height at the shoulder. This doesn't mean that the dog is necessarily small. A Clumber Spaniel is considered a medium-sized dog, but it will weigh 80 pounds, while a Dobermann is considered to be large and will weigh about the same. When you are considering the addition of a dog to your family, it is advised that you attend some dog shows and watch the breed that you are considering in the ring. Sometimes the owners will permit you to greet and pet the animals after they are finished showing. (Going into the ring is a very important time for the owners and dogs. They don't want anything to distract them. Being considerate will be appreciated!)

The typical cat is under 12 inches and 10 pounds, however, a Maine Coon cat can be as large as a small dog - and weigh as much. There are cat shows that will be an excellent opportunity for you to see and meet the different breeds.

Then we find the truly small pets. A little Guinea pig can sit in your palm, but they do need a cage and will really appreciate having a companion of their own species. The same can be said for Gerbils.

A pet bird will also need a cage, as fish will need aquariums or fish bowls. We can probably make the argument that they will occupy as much space in your home as a cat or small dog. Therefore, as space goes, we will consider them to be the same.

When all of the rational decisions are finished, it will be up to you and your family to determine which pet is ideal for you. There's more to adding a pet to your household than it's size.
